8 a.m. this morning: most people we know are either on the road, at work or school, or frantically trying to get there. Because of my husband’s work schedule, our mornings are generally laid back and a time for family bonding. This morning we all rolled out of bed just in time for Jerry’s 8 o’ clock appointment with the traveling nurse. His insurance company needed a physical done on him.
I was upstairs feeding Baby Vayla, when the nurse arrived at our door. It made me smile to hear my children peppering her with questions as she unloaded her bag. By the time I got downstairs, Jerry was lying on the floor with a portable EKG hooked up to him and the kids had brought chairs out of the toy room to sit and watch the proceedings. It was more fun than Sesame Street!
The nurse was great. She explained what was going on when she drew blood, took his blood pressure, and had him pee in a cup. They got to peek around in her bag, ask all the questions they wanted, and play nurse right along.
Not only was the whole event somewhat educational and very interesting, but the “socialization” aspect of it was pretty cool too. Socialization: the number one concern my relatives express when they proclaim the glories of public schooling. (By the way, I’m not anti-public-schools. Homeschooling isn’t for everyone.) Sure my kindergartner could have been hanging out on the bus with his buddies discussing the latest and greatest Bionicle on his way to structured “socialization” in circle time and 10 minutes of recess. But what joy to hear him interact politely and curiously with a professional adult.
Then, while everyone else started their busy days in the “real world”, we settled onto the couch for devotions and a long discussion on the various reasons God doesn’t always give us what we ask for, and I was reminded once again to be thankful for the days of homeschooling these precious gifts God has entrusted into my care.
